Is Private Registration a Good Idea for Small Business Domains?

Monday, May 19th, 2008

When registering a small business domain name, many site owners are unsure of whether they should opt for private registration. This feature, offered by most domain providers, privatizes your registration data and prevents it from being seen in a public database.

First, the basics. Anyone can search for a registered domain name’s ownership information at a number of sites. This is typically called a “WHOIS lookup”, and returns a a variety of information including the name, phone number, email, and address of the domain owner.

For individuals registering personal domains, private registration is always recommended. But for businesses, hiding your domain’s ownership information from public scrutiny can hurt your credibility. For instance, if an online store does not accept third-party payment systems such as Paypal, some buyers will perform a lookup on the domain name to see if it returns a valid phone number or address. Your willingness to provide this information to the public can sometimes be the difference between a sale and a lost opportunity.

On the other hand, spammers use automated robots to extract email addresses from the WHOIS database. This, along with an email link on their website, is the reason small businesses still receive spam mail on their private domain names. Some domain owners even get physical mail from unscrupulous domain registrars offering to renew their domain names at exorbitant rates. These mailing lists are typically put together from WHOIS database mining.

By privatizing your business’ domain registration information, you can avoid a great deal of unsolicited mail. Another reason a small business might choose private registration is if they are working from home, and want to hide the fact that they have no dedicated business address or phone number.

The balance between privacy and credibility is one that every site owner must consider when registering a small business domain. If you plan on operating a site that asks for payment or other sensitive information, it is always good policy to make your contact information available in WHOIS lookups. You may receive more spam, but those few customers who will check are worth the hassle.

11 Tips for Domain Investing

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Domain name investing is currently a booming industry and a lot of people are making surprising returns on their investments. But before you jump in to this business you should do a little research. Domain name forums are filled with stories of people who spent their life saving investing in domain names only to lose every dollar they invested. These should help you out to get started in the domain business.

1. Buy slowly. It is very common for beginners to pour thousands of dollars into their first bundle of domain names only to find that they have hundreds of junk names. It takes time to learn exactly what people want, what they will actually buy, and what prices they will pay. Resist the temptation to buy all your domains at once.

2. Visit the Forums. The best way to learn the business of domains is to frequent domain forums such as DigitalPoint, DNForum, NamePros, and DomainState. Start participating in the discussions because when it comes time to start selling your domains, you don’t want your profile to show only a few posts–a sure sign of a beginner.

3. Know the Market. Although there are some domains that sell for huge amounts of money, most domains will only make you less than a hundred dollars profit. It is important to watch the domain name forums to see not only what people are selling, but which domains are actually making the money.

4. Know the Types. There are many different types of domains. There are single-word .com domains that bring in large amounts of type-in traffic. There are type domains that leech of the traffic of bigger web sites. There are two- and three-word domains that rank well in search engines for specific terms. There are unique, brandable names that would be good for a new startup. Of course, there are the extremely rare 2, 3, and 4-letter .com domain names that fetch premium prices. Some types of domains you can turn around quickly, some will take years but might return larger profits. Be very careful about investing too much money in low-demand domain extensions such as .biz, .name, and .info.

5. Be Creative. Although so many good names have already been taken, you would be surprised that a little creativity can bring you that golden domain that will make you rich. Try the bulk domain checker at http://reg2.us/bulk to check large numbers of domains all at once.

6. Set a Budget. As you begin buying your domains, be careful to set a budget and remember that in exactly one year you will have to renew those domains. For that reason it might be better to purchase a fixed number of domains a month so you aren’t hit with a bill for thousands of dollars twelve months later. Plan your purchases and watch for special deals.

7. Watch for Scammers. The domain industry is full of fraudsters, scammers, and other criminals. Most domainers have fallen for a scam or two. This is a free-for-all market so be very suspicious of everyone who contacts you.

8. Avoid Trash Names. Although there are many great domains that break the rules for a good name, the general consensus for investors is to avoid hyphens and numbers.

9. Research the Names. Just because a domain name consists of a single word or some variant of that, it doesn’t make it a good name. Check the search engines to see how many times that word appears and ask yourself if you would ever build a serious web site with that name.

10. Avoid Trademarks. Domain names based on trademarks, even if they are a misspelling, will cause you nothing but trouble. Most of the time you will have the domain taken away or you might even face a lawsuit.

11. Be Honest. The best thing you could do for your business is to deal honestly with others and leave good feedback for those who are honest with you. Domaining isn’t a way to get rich quick and don’t think that you can pull sleazy tricks to make it rich. The best strategy is simple honesty.

Domain Parking - Monetization Tutorial

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Domain Parking allows owners of website addresses, also called domainers, to make money with their
domain names without having to deal with hosting fees or web design (everything it’s handled by the
domain parking company).

To park a domain it’s something really easy: Find a a parking company, point your domain to it and select a design for your website (based on the subject of your domain) from the parking panel. When done, the parking company places targeted advertising on your parked domains and you earn money whenever visitors to your domains click on the ads. That’s all.

Why Park?

Domain parking is great because you can get some domains set them up and forget . With parking
you don’t have to design a site or create content (very tedious). You don’t even have to pay hosting
bills (domains will be hosted at the parking company).

Companies

There are many parking companies out there: Sedo, Parked, NameDrive and others. NameDrive is a good parking company that you can try (has many templates, cool designs and good keyword optimization).

Revenue

A common question is “How much can you make from your parked domains?”. Answer is easy: It depends on the traffic that your domains generate. You can make pennies or big numbers (there are many guys making 4/5 figures with parking). This is the most important thing that you have to learn.

Getting Domains With Traffic

There are 3 types of domains that will bring you money right from the start:

1. Type-In Domains: Domains that lots of users will type without going to the engines. Example: ringtones.com

2. Typo Domains: Mispelled Domains. Example: Ringtong.com

3. Expired Domains With Traffic.

The Future of Search Engines

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Localization and context improvements in search engine rankings involves trying to better anticipate the person’s needs. Google currently does this by offering the option to save search history and then offers up suggestions based on the statistics you have provided through Google history. The semantic web involves using a number of languages to improve the quality of indexing websites more accurately and quickly. Currently Yahoo is the only major search engine that uses Semantic Web protocols.

The ability of Google to provide local search information based on the user’s location settings is also an attempt to improve the localization of SERPS. Google maps is the best example of this with Business 1st appearing on the Lancaster, UK map together with address, website and telephone number information. This type of geotargeting is also possible without use intervention by the search engine performing an IP lookup and prioritizing websites based in the UK for searches originating from the UK. This is also used to serve PPC (pay per click) internet marketing that is targeted at specific locations.

Google prefers the use of IP lookups to determine the location of a website because many websites (such as business 1st) use “.com” TLDs. But even IP lookups are not effective if the webpage is also hosted in a foreign country.

Context and personalization of the search engine results was started by Google with its personalized homepage and web history options (googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/02/personally-speaking.html). It means that a different set of results will appear in SERPS if you use the service compared to if you do not use the service. Microsoft also made a similar copy of Google’s Web History and Google Desktop Search in what was called “What I’ve Seen” which was then integrated into Windows Desktop Search and now evolved to PHLAT (research.microsoft.com/displayArticle.aspx?id=1415).

The semantic web is an attempt to add an extra layer of protocols to provide more data about webpages. Yahoo was the first to read RDF Site Summery (RSS) files and Yahoo Pipes uses XML based RSS feeds from websites. Atom is the Google version of RSS feeds which is intended to provide structured data about websites. This is useful for keeping up to date with new products available on ecommerce online shop websites for example.

A setback to personalized search engine results is the privacy concerns, especially with regards to the recent cases of the UK government loosing sensitive personal information stored electronically. But as more people start using personalized search, search engine optimization companies will have to start offering products such as RSS and RDS Site Summaries.

Do Not Leave Your Landing Pages To Chance

Monday, May 19th, 2008

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) have become essential process that cannot be overlooked by any online business website. Having a well designed website/page that is not optimized for the search engines is not desirable as it may remain hidden. The webpage / site must be able to pull in the required traffic that fulfils the business objectives. If you have an online marketing campaign going on, it is very essential that required potential traffic keeps flowing into the website and to the specific landing page.

Actually in SEO every page of a site that gets indexed by search engines becomes a potential landing page and nothing is left to chance. Here there may not be a single landing page that demands immediate /instant conversion. The content of the web page and/or links to the page are optimized for very specific, carefully researched keywords. This requires very careful planning.

In SEM and PPC (pay per click) campaigns, a landing page, also known by the term lead “capture page” is the page that appears when a potential customer clicks on an advertisement or a search-engine result link. The page will usually display content that is a logical extension of the advertisement or link, which is optimized to feature specific keywords or phrases for indexing by search engines. This landing page is also used for counting and tracking all the arrivals and determines the level of effectiveness of a marketing campaign.

Thus landing pages are of two types

  • Referential
  • Transactional

While the referential landing page contains the relevant information as required by the visitor, a transactional landing page seeks to persuade a visitor to complete some transaction. This could be filling up some form/ registration/ or addition to a mailing list etc. Only once the transaction is over, can the visitor be said to be a conversion. But this is a challenging process. How do we motivate a visitor to register? He needs to be comforted, motivated and directed to take action and get converted. A more efficient landing page will mean a better conversion rate.

Needless to say, a lot of effort has to go in designing the right landing page that can enhance a website’s conversion rate. One might have to even try out different design options and see which one works best.

SEO - The Best Links Come Naturally

Monday, May 19th, 2008

No one disputes the power of back links to improve you search engine ranking. In fact, there are tons of people making money by falsely inflating your back links. Ultimately, however, most of these methods fail to give you good links and if you push it too close to to the edge, Google may slap you right up the side of your head.

The best and most effective links are the natural ones that come from sites that come from quality sources and by nature of the site content are supportive and you are currently reading the best way to produce those links.

Yes, I am talking about article marketing. Everyone knows the value of article marketing. It makes you recognized as an expert in your niche and also produces trust between you and your readers. One of the real values that we sometime fail to recognize is the great links that it produces from blogs and websites that publish your article.

This is the epitome of a good natural link and when the search engines rank you site, you will find that your ranking grows exponentially with the number of quality articles that have published your work on their blog or site.

As an example, everyone knows that the search engines do not look kindly upon opt-in pages but, after just a couple of dozen published articles on one set of keywords, one squeeze page of mine went from impossible to find in the thousands of results to being within a couple of pages at the top of the list. That doesn’t sound like much but, when you realize that we are talking about a non-seo optimized squeeze page, you can begin to see how important article marketing is.

So, get to work. Write some good interesting articles and not only develop a reputation for expertise and trust but, produce those back links that the search engines love so dearly. One note of caution, be consistent and try to produce an article a day. From personal experience, if you don’t do this on a daily basis, you will see your site rankings drop just as fast as they rose. In this business, you are only remembered for what you did last and if you take a week off from article marketing, your search engine rankings will drop just as fast as they grew.

Internet Social Networking Explained

Monday, April 21st, 2008

An online community is a social network with common interests and goals that people from across the globe can join to share their feelings and views. There are a variety of different types of communities you can join and many ways to participate and interact within the community.

Two popular online communities right now are MySpace and Facebook. These sites let you create your own unique page designed to your likes and interests. You can post pictures, join groups, add friends, find friends and co-workers and even start pages for your company. You can post blogs on your own page, which are sort of like journal entries, post comments on your friend’s pages or group pages and send private messages. One can also create pages for a cause you are interested in or an activity you are having and through the site you can send invitations and invite people to join. If you are making your own personal page, you have the option to make sure that only your “friends” can see your page. This makes these communities secure and keeps everyone safe from online predators. These sites are a very good way to keep in touch with your friends and family or to reunite with old ones.

Other popular online communities generally consist of journal or blog sites. On these sites you can write down all of your emotions and feelings or just write about your day and get feedback from other members of the community. You have the option of making your entries private or available to the public to view. These sites also let you add friends so you can keep up on their daily lives as well.

There are also online communities available in almost every town. Here, members can have access to local classified ads ranging from pets to houses for sale. You can also stay on top of local news and all upcoming events so you won’t miss a thing. Most of these sites also set up forums so you can chat with other locals in your area and allow you to set up your own personal profile and even add photos.

As you can see, there is more to the internet than just looking up information. Online communities are an easy way to keep up with what’s going on in the world and to voice your opinion on issues that concern you and most importantly, to keep up with the people we care about without having to disrupt your hectic lifestyle. There is an online community out there for just about everyone.

The Importance of Australian Search Engine Optimisation

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Globally it’s very hard to rank for competitive keywords. Almost all global companies have seo implementation, making it very difficult to rub shoulders with these large corporations. What does this have to relate to Australia? Well Australians are only waking to the idea Search Engine Optimisation as a Online Marketing technique, with only a handful Australian websites with seo implementation. I’m not talking about meta tags and keywords here. I’m referring to serious SEO implementation that reaches much deeper than the Meta Tags and Titles.
For those Australian websites who do have serious seo implementation are probably finding now that they are on top, its pretty easy maintaining this position, compared to the websites who are struggling to climb that ladder. Why is this? There are a lot of variables why older sites rank better but mainly its because their old. Think of it like a bottle of red wine you set down in the basement in 1998, getting better with age. It is exactly the same theory for Websites. Google has to trust your website before it lets you rank. Trust is a very big and complex variable in Search Engine Optimisation which toys with the concept of page rank and partner sites. One way to gain trust from Google is to let your website age, hence making it very important to get your business online now. With correct seo implementation  your search engine friendly website can become a very rewarding marketing nest egg.
